Cutting one image into many

The image is divided into a grid of the rows and columns you specify, and each cell becomes its own file. Every tile is cut from the source at full resolution rather than from a downscaled preview, so the pieces are as sharp as the original allows.

The [msm_tool slug="image-splitter"] is most often used for a social profile grid — one image cut into three or nine tiles that reassemble into a single picture on a profile page — but it is equally useful for slicing a design mockup or breaking a large scan into manageable pieces.

Upload a social grid in reverse

This is the detail that catches everyone once.

Feeds display posts newest first, filling from the top-left and pushing older content down and right. So the tile that should end up at the top-left must be uploaded last.

Number your tiles as they appear in the finished picture, then upload from the highest number to the lowest. Getting it wrong produces a grid that is mirrored or scrambled, and the only fix is deleting every post and starting again — which also loses whatever engagement they had.

Post them in one sitting. A grid half-uploaded looks like a mistake to anyone who visits in between.

Start from dimensions that divide evenly

An image whose width divides exactly by the column count produces tiles of identical size. Otherwise the last column and row carry the remainder and come out slightly different.

That is arithmetic rather than a fault, and it is usually invisible — a few pixels on one edge. It becomes visible when the tiles are displayed adjacent to each other at a size where the mismatch shows, which is precisely the social grid case.

Resize to a clean multiple first. For a three-column grid, 1080 or 1440 wide divides neatly; 1000 does not.

Crop to the platform's ratio before splitting

A profile grid displays each tile in a fixed shape — square on most platforms. If your source image is not the right overall proportion, every tile gets cropped again on upload, in a way you did not choose.

For a 3×3 square grid, the source needs to be square. For a 3×1 strip of squares, the source needs to be 3:1. Work that out before splitting rather than discovering it during upload.

Other uses

  • Slicing a design mockup into sections for handover or for building piece by piece.
  • Breaking a large scan into pages or panels that can be handled individually.
  • Preparing a print that will be tiled across several sheets — though you will want an overlap for that, which this does not add.
  • Sprite extraction, where a sheet of evenly spaced icons splits cleanly into its cells.

Keep the original

The tiles cannot be reassembled here, and reassembling them elsewhere leaves visible seams — each tile was compressed independently, so the edges no longer match perfectly.

Keep the full image. You will want it when the platform changes its grid ratio, when you decide on a different crop, or when someone asks for the picture rather than the pieces.
