What a headline has to do

A headline makes one promise and sets one expectation. It tells a reader what they will get and roughly how much work it will cost them, and everything after that is the article keeping or breaking that promise.

Most weak headlines fail by describing the subject rather than the payoff. Email marketing names a topic. Why your welcome sequence loses people at message three names a problem the reader may already have. The second one is not cleverer — it is more specific, and specificity is almost the whole game.

The [msm_tool slug="headline-generator"] gives you a spread of angles from one topic, which is useful mainly because the first headline you think of is almost never your best one.

The patterns that keep working

  • The specific number. Seven beats several because it tells the reader how long this will take. Use the real count.
  • The named obstacle. Without losing your rankings, on a shared host, when you have no budget. A constraint tells the right reader this was written for them.
  • The correction. What most guides get wrong about… works when you genuinely disagree with the consensus and can say why. It fails badly when you do not.
  • The plain question. If people type the question, a headline that matches it is honest and finds them.
  • The direct how-to. Unglamorous, and it converts. How to plus a concrete outcome has never stopped working.

Curiosity gaps and the cost of using them

Withholding the payoff raises clicks. The one setting that halved our load time gets opened more than the version that names the setting. That is a measured effect and it is why the pattern is everywhere.

It also has a bill. A reader who clicks for an answer, scrolls three screens and finds a preamble does not come back, and short visits are exactly what analytics and search engines both notice. Curiosity gets the click; only delivery earns the next one.

The workable version: withhold the detail, never the subject. Naming what the article is about while leaving the specifics for the piece itself is a fair trade. Concealing the subject entirely is a bait headline, and readers have been trained by a decade of them to recognise the smell.

Length, and where it gets cut

A headline is displayed in several places and truncated differently in each. Search results cut somewhere around sixty characters. Social cards, email subject lines and phone screens all cut shorter, and a phone is where most of your readers are.

The practical rule is to front-load. Put the promise in the first forty characters or so and let the rest be qualification. Then read only the first half and ask whether it still means something — because for a large share of your audience, the first half is the entire headline.

Your page title and your search-result title need not be identical, and often should not be. One is written for a reader already on the page; the other has to compete in a list of ten.

Testing without fooling yourself

  1. Generate more than you need. Ten candidates, keep three. The value is in the discarded ones showing you which angles exist.
  2. Read them cold. Leave them an hour. The headline that seemed clever while you were writing frequently reads as vague later.
  3. Test one variable. Comparing a question against a listicle against a how-to tells you nothing about why one won. Change the number, or the constraint, or the verb — not all three.
  4. Judge on what happened after the click. A headline that wins on click-through and loses on reading time has not won.
  5. Check it against the finished article. Headlines are usually written before the piece is done, and pieces change. A promise the article no longer keeps is the most common headline failure of all.

Writing a topic worth generating from

Generated headlines are only as specific as what you feed them. A one-word topic returns interchangeable phrasings of that word. Give it the audience, the angle and the constraint — who this is for, what you are arguing, and what makes it hard — and the candidates stop being generic because the input stopped being generic.

Then edit the one you pick. Nothing generated should go out untouched, and a headline is the sentence most of your readers will judge you by, so it is the last one worth outsourcing entirely.

Everything runs in your browser, or between your browser and your chosen provider if you have added a key. The topic and the headlines are not stored here.
