  • منظر نہیں، صورتحال دیں: "a lighthouse keeper finds a bottle" "a story about the sea" سے بہتر ہے۔ کچھ نہ کچھ ہو رہا ہونا چاہیے۔

Why generated stories all feel the same

Ask a model for a story and you tend to get the same one: a protagonist with a vague longing, a mysterious discovery, a moment of doubt, a resolution that arrives without cost. It is competent, it is complete, and it is inert.

That happens because a model produces what is most probable, and the most probable story is the average of every story like it. Averages have no edges. Everything interesting in fiction — the specific detail, the wrong choice, the ending that refuses to console — is by definition unusual, which is precisely what a probability engine steers away from.

So the useful question is not how to get a good story out of the [msm_tool slug="story-generator"], but how to use one for the parts of writing where an average is genuinely helpful: breaking a blank page, testing a premise, generating options you would not have thought of and mostly rejecting them.

Stakes are what the model leaves out

A story needs someone who wants something, something in the way, and a cost for failing. Generated drafts reliably supply the first, gesture at the second and omit the third entirely — which is why they feel weightless even when the sentences are fine.

You can supply it. Instead of a premise, give the model a pressure:

  • A want that is specific. Not she wanted to be free but she wanted the deed to her mother's house back from her brother.
  • An obstacle with a face. Someone who wants the opposite, for reasons that are not villainy.
  • A cost that is real. What she loses by winning. This is the line that turns an anecdote into a story.
  • A constraint on the ending. No reconciliation or she gets it and it does not help forces the draft off the default track.

Specificity is the whole craft

The difference between flat prose and living prose is almost always concreteness. An old house is nothing. A house where the third stair announced everyone who used it is a place, and it implies a family who learned to avoid that stair.

Models default to the abstract because abstraction is safe and general. You can push against it directly: ask for the specific object, the specific sound, the thing in the room that does not belong. Ask what the character does with their hands. Ask for the detail that would only be true of this person.

Most of what comes back will still be generic and you will bin it. The one line in ten that lands is the point — and it is usually not the line you would have written, which is the actual value of generating options.

Where a generator earns its place

  1. Premise generation. Twenty openings in a minute. Nineteen are unusable and the twentieth surprises you.
  2. Getting unstuck mid-scene. Ask what could plausibly happen next, read the five suggestions, and notice which one you immediately reject — that reaction tells you what the scene is actually about.
  3. Naming things. Places, ships, streets, minor characters. Tedious to invent and low-stakes to outsource.
  4. Structural scaffolding. A beat sheet you then dismantle is often more useful than a blank page.
  5. Testing a shape. If a premise produces an obvious story even from a model, it may be too familiar to be worth writing straight.

Where it does not

Voice. A distinctive narrator is the thing a probability engine cannot supply, because a voice is a consistent set of unusual choices. Generated prose can imitate a register, but the imitation is smooth where a real voice is idiosyncratic, and readers feel the difference long before they can name it.

Emotional truth, for the same reason. Grief on the page works when it is specific and slightly wrong — the mourner noticing something trivial. The average version of grief is the version everyone has read.

Length, too. Long generated fiction loses track of what it established: eye colours drift, a character who left the room answers a question, a subplot is abandoned mid-sentence. Generate scenes, not novels.

Editing generated fiction

Cut the first paragraph and often the last. Models open with scene-setting nobody needs and close by explaining the meaning of what you just read, which is the one thing fiction should never do.

Delete the adverbs and about half the adjectives. Replace the abstract nouns with objects. Then read it aloud and listen for the rhythm — generated sentences run to a very even length, and a story with no short sentences has no punch anywhere.

Then rewrite it in your own words. What survives that pass is the structure and the odd good image, which was always the useful part.

Everything you type goes from your browser to the provider you chose, under their terms, and never through this site. Worth a thought before pasting an unpublished manuscript into any tool, this one included.
