What a word counter is for
A word counter reports how much text you have written. That sounds trivial until you are working to a limit — a 500-word assignment, a 160-character meta description, a 2,200-character LinkedIn post, a journal submission with a hard abstract cap. Guessing costs you a rewrite. Counting takes a second.

One honest caveat about sentence counting: abbreviations inflate it. Dr. Smith arrived at 9 a.m. reads as one sentence to you and as three to any counter that splits on full stops. If your text is dense with abbreviations, treat the sentence count as an estimate rather than a fact.
Word counts that actually matter
Academic writing
Most institutions specify a tolerance, commonly ten per cent either side of the stated limit. What counts towards the total varies enormously — footnotes, block quotations, tables and the bibliography are sometimes included and sometimes not. Check the specific rubric rather than assuming, because the penalty for overrunning is usually applied mechanically.
SEO and web copy
Title tags are typically truncated by Google around 60 characters and meta descriptions around 155 to 160, though the real limit is pixel width rather than character count, so wide capital letters eat the budget faster. Treat those numbers as guidance, not law.
Social platforms
X allows 280 characters on a free account. LinkedIn posts truncate with a "see more" link at around 210 characters, so the opening sentence carries most of the weight. Instagram captions cap at 2,200. Bluesky allows 300.
Speaking
Comfortable speech runs at roughly 130 to 150 words per minute, noticeably slower than silent reading. A five-minute talk is therefore around 650 to 750 words. Note that the reading time shown above uses the 200-word reading figure, not the speaking figure — if you are timing a speech, divide by 140 instead.
How to reduce a word count without gutting the argument
When you need to cut ten per cent, the words to remove are rarely the interesting ones.
- Cut hedges. Quite, rather, somewhat, arguably, it could be said that — these dilute a claim without qualifying it usefully.
- Collapse "there is" constructions. There are several factors that influence becomes several factors influence. Two words saved, every time.
- Replace nominalisations with verbs. Made an assessment of becomes assessed.
- Delete the first sentence of each paragraph and check whether the paragraph still works. Surprisingly often it does, because the opening sentence was throat-clearing.

Differences of a few words on a long document are normal. When a hard limit is being enforced by a specific system, count with that system.
