Filters applied by the browser's own pipeline

The filter is applied as the photograph is drawn onto a canvas, by the same optimised code that handles CSS filters. That is why it is immediate even on a large file — no JavaScript is walking pixel by pixel.

The [msm_tool slug="photo-filters"] preserves the source format, so a JPEG comes back a JPEG and a PNG comes back a PNG with its transparency. That avoids the common annoyance of a small photograph returning as a lossless file several times its original size.

Strength is the setting that matters

Most filters are designed to be obvious at full strength, because that is how they demonstrate themselves. At a hundred percent they read as applied — the viewer sees the filter before they see the photograph.

The same effect at a third of the strength usually reads as a photograph that was simply taken well. That is nearly always the better outcome, and it is the single adjustment that separates a considered treatment from an Instagram preset circa 2012.

A working method: push the filter to full, decide whether you like the direction, then halve it. Twice.

Every save re-encodes

Applying a filter to a JPEG and saving produces a new JPEG. Once is imperceptible. Repeating it — filtering an already-filtered copy, then adjusting, then filtering again — accumulates compression damage that is invisible at each step and obvious after four.

Work from the original each time rather than from your last export. If you want to try three treatments, produce three files from the same source rather than a chain.

Consistency beats individual perfection

A gallery, a product catalogue or a team page looks considerably better when every image has the same treatment, even a mild one, than when each has been optimised individually.

A small saturation and contrast adjustment applied uniformly pulls inconsistent source photographs — different cameras, different lighting, different days — into something that reads as one set. That is usually worth more than perfecting any single image.

What a filter cannot recover

  • Brightening a dark photograph raises the noise along with the shadows. Underexposure is not fixable after the fact; it is only trade-able.
  • Sharpening an out-of-focus image makes the blur crisper. There is no detail to recover.
  • Increasing contrast on a flat image works, up to a point, and past that point it clips the highlights and shadows into pure white and black, losing information permanently.
  • Correcting a strong colour cast is possible but rarely clean, because the affected channel has less information to work with.

A filter adjusts what is in the image. Nothing adds what was never captured.

Orientation is handled

Photographs from phones are often stored sideways with a tag saying which way up they go. That tag is applied while drawing, so a photograph taken in portrait stays portrait rather than arriving on its side — a common failure in tools that read the pixels without checking the metadata.

Nothing is uploaded

The photograph is processed in your browser. Worth knowing before sending an image of something private to an online editor, which is the usual alternative for a quick adjustment.

When to use something else

These are one-pass adjustments applied to a whole image. If you need to lighten only the shadows, adjust one colour independently, or work on part of the frame, that is what a real editor is for.

The case for a filter tool is speed and consistency on a batch — not replacing the thing that does selective work.
