Flipping reverses; rotating turns

They look similar in a menu and they are different operations with different consequences.

A rotation turns the image about its centre. Everything in it stays as it was, just oriented differently. A flip mirrors across an axis, and everything in it becomes its own reflection — which is fine for a landscape and destructive for anything containing text, faces or recognisable objects.

The [msm_tool slug="image-flip"] does both, and lets you combine them in one pass, which is worth doing rather than saving between the two steps.

What a flip breaks

  • Text. Signage, number plates, book spines, screen contents, watermarks — all become nonsense, and it is the first thing anyone notices.
  • Faces. Human faces are not symmetrical. A mirrored portrait looks like a different person to anyone who knows the subject, and subtly wrong to people who do not. Portrait photographers avoid it for exactly this reason.
  • Anything with handedness. A guitarist becomes left-handed. A watch moves to the other wrist. A car's steering wheel changes sides, which is instantly noticeable to anyone in the country it does not match.
  • Logos and brand marks, which is a trademark problem as well as an aesthetic one.

When a flip is the right tool

Genuinely useful cases exist and they are mostly compositional:

  1. Matching gaze or motion direction to a layout — a subject looking off the edge of the page instead of into it. This is the classic magazine fix, and it is legitimate provided the frame contains no text.
  2. Building a symmetrical pattern from a single tile.
  3. Correcting a genuine mirror — a selfie camera or a document photographed through glass.
  4. Balancing a pair of images that should face each other on a spread.

In editorial and journalistic contexts, flipping a photograph is generally treated as an unacceptable alteration regardless of intent. Worth knowing which side of that line you are working on.

Vertical flip in one pass

A horizontal flip mirrors left to right. A vertical mirror is a half turn plus a horizontal flip, and combining them in a single operation encodes the file once rather than twice — which matters if the output format is lossy.

Right angles cost nothing

Flips and quarter turns rearrange whole pixels. Nothing is resampled, so the result is pixel-for-pixel identical to the original with the coordinates moved. The only quality cost is re-encoding, and choosing a lossless output format removes even that.

Quarter turns change the shape

A landscape image becomes portrait, and anything downstream expecting a fixed aspect ratio needs that accounted for — a grid cell, a social card, a print template.

Half turns leave the dimensions alone, which is why they are the safe one for a batch.

Check the orientation tag first

Phones often store a photograph in the sensor's orientation with a tag saying which way up it belongs, and browsers apply that tag when displaying. An image that already looks correct is correct — rotating it will make it wrong.

If a photograph looks upright in one program and sideways in another, the tag is present and one of them is ignoring it. That is a case for baking in the rotation, not for guessing at it.
