Erweiterter Entwurf

Expanding is not lengthening

There are two things people mean by making a passage longer, and only one of them is worth doing.

Padding adds words without adding information: a sentence restating the previous sentence, an introduction announcing what the paragraph will cover, an adverb in front of every verb. The word count rises and the reader learns nothing new, which they notice immediately even if they could not name what is wrong.

Expansion adds the things a compressed note left out — the reason behind a claim, the example that makes it concrete, the caveat, the mechanism, the consequence. That is a genuinely different operation, and it is the one the [msm_tool slug="text-expander"] is for.

The test is simple: could a reader do something after reading the longer version that they could not do after the short one? If not, you padded.

What was actually missing

Notes are compressed because you already know the surrounding material. Expanding means restoring what your reader does not have. Almost always it is one of these:

  • The why. Move the cache to Redis becomes useful when it says what broke without it.
  • The example. One concrete instance does more work than three sentences of description.
  • The mechanism. Not just that something works, but what it is doing when it does.
  • The exception. The case where the advice stops applying is often the most valuable line in a paragraph.
  • The consequence. What follows for the reader specifically, rather than in general.

Naming which of these you want, rather than asking for more words, is the single change that most improves the output.

Where invention creeps in

This is the risk that belongs to expansion and to no other writing task. A summariser can only lose things; an expander has to produce material that was not in your input, and it will produce it whether or not it knows anything.

Ask a model to expand conversion rose after the redesign and you may get a plausible figure, a plausible timeframe and a plausible mechanism, none of which came from you. Nothing marks them as invented. They read exactly like the parts you wrote.

So expand in small pieces — a bullet or a sentence at a time — and read the result against your note asking one question: which of these details did I supply? Anything you did not supply is either yours to verify or yours to delete.

Where expansion genuinely helps

  1. Meeting notes into a written summary that someone absent can follow without the room's context.
  2. Bullet points into prose for a document where a list would look unfinished.
  3. A changelog line into release notes that say what changed for the person using it, not for the person who built it.
  4. An outline section into a first draft, when the structure is settled and the blank page is the obstacle.
  5. Terse feedback into something sendable, where the substance is right but the delivery would land badly.

Where it does not

Word-count targets. If a piece needs to reach a number and has nothing more to say, expansion produces exactly the padding that both readers and markers are trained to spot. The honest answers are to research more or to submit something shorter.

Technical documentation, where compression is a feature. A reference page is scanned, not read, and expanding it into prose makes it slower to use.

Anything already dense — an abstract, a specification, a legal clause. There is no slack in the text and adding words adds ambiguity.

Cutting back afterwards

Expanded prose almost always needs a trim, and the trimming is where quality actually arrives. Three passes catch most of it.

Delete sentences that announce. In this section we will look at and it is important to note that can go without loss in nearly every case.

Merge adjacent sentences making the same point in different words. Models do this constantly, and it is the clearest signal of generated text.

Then read for rhythm. Expansion tends to produce paragraphs of very even sentence length, which is soporific. Breaking one long sentence into a short one and a longer one restores the movement.

Without a key the expansion runs in your browser; with one, your text goes straight from your browser to the provider you chose, under their terms. This site stores neither the note nor the result.
