Luminance weights the channels 0.2126 red, 0.7152 green and 0.0722 blue, matching how the eye responds — which is why a plain average makes reds look too light and greens too dark. Lightness takes the midpoint of the brightest and darkest channel and flattens saturated colours. The threshold option throws away every intermediate tone, so it is useful for line art and destructive on photographs.
