Paraphrased Options

This tool runs entirely in your browser and produces an estimate from the text or file you supply. It does not query an external database or index, and nothing you enter is uploaded.

How this tool works

Be aware of what the offline mode actually does: it swaps a short list of stock words — use becomes utilize, good becomes exceptional, make sure becomes ensure — and returns your sentence otherwise untouched. Meaning, structure and rhythm are unchanged. That is word substitution, not paraphrasing, and the result label says so rather than pretending otherwise.

There is no honest way to paraphrase in a browser without a language model, so the tool does not claim to. Add a free AI key and you get three genuine rewrites — plain, formal and fluent — that restructure sentences rather than swapping vocabulary, while keeping every fact, figure and name exactly as you wrote it.

Getting a usable rewrite

  • Paste whole paragraphs: a rewrite needs context. Single sentences give the model nothing to restructure around.
  • Keep quotes out: anything in quotation marks should stay verbatim. Rewriting a quotation is misquoting a source.
  • Read all three versions: they differ in structure, not just wording. The best sentence is often in a different version from the best paragraph.
  • Check names and numbers: the instruction is to preserve them exactly, but verify before you publish.

What rewriting is actually for

People reach for a rewriter for three quite different reasons, and the reason decides whether the result is any good.

Sometimes the sentence is clumsy and you want the same meaning in better prose. Sometimes the register is wrong — the paragraph is fine for a colleague and too casual for a client. And sometimes someone wants to publish another person's writing without it being recognisable, which is not paraphrasing but plagiarism with extra steps, and no tool makes it otherwise.

The first two are ordinary editing work. The [msm_tool slug="paraphrasing-tool"] handles them by rewriting sentence structure rather than swapping vocabulary, which is the distinction that decides whether a rewrite is worth having.

Word substitution is not paraphrasing

Most free rewriters do one thing: replace words with synonyms from a list. Use becomes utilise, good becomes exceptional, show becomes demonstrate. The sentence keeps its structure, its rhythm and its length, and gains a thesaurus smell that any reader can detect immediately.

It is also actively dangerous, because synonyms are rarely exact. Cheap and inexpensive carry different judgements. Argue and claim attribute different confidence. A substitution engine cannot see which one the sentence needed, so it changes what you asserted while leaving the sentence looking untouched.

Genuine rewriting restructures. It changes what is the subject, splits a sentence that carried two ideas, moves the conclusion to the front, or turns a passive construction into somebody actually doing something. That is what changes readability, and it is why a rewrite that only swaps words is worth exactly nothing.

Facts and figures must survive intact

This is the rule that separates a usable rewrite from a liability. Every number, date, name, price, unit and proper noun must come back exactly as it went in. So must every hedge.

Hedges are the ones that go missing. Results suggest a link becoming results show a link is a one-word change that turns a cautious finding into a claim you cannot support. Up to forty per cent becoming forty per cent is the same failure with a figure attached. Read a rewrite specifically hunting for these, because they are invisible at normal reading speed — the sentence is fluent, confident and wrong.

Choosing between the rewrites

With a key you get several versions of the same passage rather than one, which is more useful than it first appears: seeing three structures side by side shows you what your original was doing that you had stopped noticing.

  • Plain shortens sentences and removes abstraction. Best for instructions, documentation and anything a tired reader will skim.
  • Formal raises register and distance. Right for a client, a proposal or a complaint; wrong for anything that should sound like a person.
  • Fluent smooths rhythm and connectives. The most useful pass on text written by a non-native speaker, and the one most likely to flatten a distinctive voice.

Take the version you like and edit it. The output is a draft of a sentence, not a replacement for your judgement about which sentence you wanted.

Where rewriting does not solve the problem

  1. Citation. Rewriting someone's argument does not remove the obligation to credit them. Paraphrased ideas need a source just as quoted ones do.
  2. Quotations. A quote that has been rewritten is no longer a quote. Either reproduce it exactly and attribute it, or describe what was said in your own words and say so.
  3. Duplicate content. Spinning one article into ten does not produce ten articles. Search guidance treats the result as what it is, and readers reach the same conclusion faster.
  4. Prose that is wrong. A rewriter improves how a sentence reads, never whether it is true. A confidently phrased error is a worse problem than a clumsy one.

A workflow that produces something better

Rewrite a paragraph at a time, not a whole document. Longer passages give the model room to drift, and you lose the ability to see precisely what changed.

Then read the two versions against each other rather than reading the new one alone. Alone, generated prose almost always reads well; that is the one thing it reliably does. Side by side, you can see what was dropped, what was hardened, and which sentence you actually preferred before the rewrite touched it.

Nothing you paste is stored here. Without a key the rewriting runs in your browser; with one, your text goes from your browser straight to the provider you chose, under their terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Specific to the Paraphrasing & Rewriter Tool. Broader questions about this category are answered on the category page.

Because without a key that is precisely what happened — five words were swapped and nothing else changed. Labelling it accurately is more useful than a generic message implying the text was rewritten. Add a free key and the label changes to name the provider that did the actual work.
No, and it should not be used for that. Word substitution leaves sentence structure intact, which is exactly what similarity checkers measure. A model rewrite changes more, but submitting someone else's argument as your own is plagiarism whatever the wording. Use this to improve your own writing, not to disguise someone else's.
That is the instruction the model is given, and it is generally followed for straightforward prose. Technical, legal and medical text is where paraphrasing goes wrong, because a small change of wording can be a large change of meaning. In those domains, compare against the original line by line.
Because "better" depends on where the text is going. The plain version suits documentation, the formal one a report or client email, the fluent one anything read aloud or published. Picking sentences across all three usually beats accepting any one wholesale.
With a key, yes — the model replies in the language you paste. The offline substitution list is English-only, so in other languages it will return your text essentially unchanged, and the label will still tell you that is what happened.
